What is ZNE?

A zero net energy building produces as much energy as it uses. While still connected to the electricity grid, the structure can harvest power from solar electric panels or a small wind generator.  The Demonstration ZNE Retrofit Project will develop solutions through an applied research approach to study the interactive effects of cutting-edge energy efficiency measures alongside renewable energy strategies to achieve ZNE or near-ZNE performance.

Potential features of the home will include:
  • Efficient lighting system including LED (light emitting diodes) and CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) fixtures, which use a fraction of the power of regular incandescent lamps
  • High-efficiency, climate appropriate heating and cooling systems
  • Better, upgraded insulation, windows and building envelop measures
  • ENERGYSTAR rated appliances
  • On-site, clean renewable energy generation though a roof-mounted Solar PV System
